Beyond the Infinity of Empty Space

Available on Kindle in 2020

Dougie and Isla Jamieson were matched in every way. Both were celebrated mountaineers running a successful climbing centre in the Scottish Highlands, everything was perfect.

Then a seismic event from Isla’s military past in Afghanistan, changes everything when old flame, Major James Mortimer, appears. Suddenly her future is in doubt when she is exposed to the plots and conspiracies of al Qaida, a Saudi prince and Russian arms dealers.

Dougie finds himself feeling that his life no longer has meaning and he escapes to the Andes to make the first solo attempt on the West Face of Suila Grande, made infamous by two British climbers thirty years earlier. Not even Dougie’s climbing partner could stop him in his do or die escapade.

The climb is just the start of what proves to test Dougie and Isla’s love for each other to breaking point and beyond . . . and Dougie’s will to live to the absolute limit on the Old Man of Hoy.

This is a tale full of twists and turns and only in the final pages will you discover the truth.

A little taster

Dougie took the first steps into the glacial lake. His feet froze in the icy cold water and he felt nothing on the sharp rocks. He couldn’t stop fate pulling his life to the other side.

He waded deeper and deeper, his submerging body numbed with the cold; yelling at the top of his voice, ‘why Isla, why?’

He moved his hands to his face to cover the flood of tears rolling down his cheeks, until he was chest deep in the icy waters. All he had to do was launch himself and, in a few minutes, the cold glacial waters would suck out his life. He could rest forever.

He moved his hands away from his face ready to plunge headlong into the water. He put his feet down on the sharp rocks, his head barely above the water.

Dougie wanted to lash out at something and thrashed the water. If there had been rocks close by he would have pummelled them with his fists, until they were raw lumps of bloodied tissues and broken bones. He was beyond tears filled with anger, frustration and hatred, but he couldn’t lash out anymore.
